Biography

Born in 1863, he was educated at Rugby School and was commissioned, from Sandhurst, as a Lieutenant in 1884. He joined the 1st Battalion DLI, but during the Boer War served with the Mounted Infantry, commanding the 13th Battalion Mounted Infantry. He was made a Brevet-Major and awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his work in South Africa.

After the war, he had various staff appointments, until he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1910 and became Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion DLI.

In 1915, he was made a Temporary Brigadier-General and given command of the 76th Infantry Brigade on the Western Front. In March 1916, he was badly gassed and forced to retire.

Ernest Pratt died in November 1918, as a result of his gassing. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery in London.
